Opening the socials and the first post says a woman’s body found dumped and mutilated, 97 women in the last 90 days killed, a student found dumped and you sit and wonder are we living with animals, are we actually in hell, which society is this? The one where humans are meant to think and observe dignity, decency, compassion and love? Or maybe I am too naive and just focused on seeing the good of everyone I miss the point where people who are meant to be in hell are still here with us.
I don’t understand how much hatred, how much money will make you kill someone and not just kill, rape, cut them off to pieces and dump them to be eaten by dogs. Its unfathomable in my brain. When you google on what makes humans different from other animals it says the ability to reason, have language, solve difficult problems and introspection.
We also have the ID-our instincts, the EGO-our reality and SUPEREGO- our morality. Is our morality dead? are our instincts more self destructive than before? What are the driving forces? I believe that there is a root cause to all this. Is it societal pressure? Are people overstimulated through social media and drive for money, is it drugs? The lay mans asking would be ,are we okay in the head?
Just a few months ago we gathered in the streets of Nairobi to march, rise an uproar on Femicide but i guess it was just but another ‘occupy’. Okay, we raised awareness, has that stopped femicide /GBV? No. As a matter of fact Women in countries like Afghanistan despite not having their rights to education ,freedom to move now they cant even talk and show their faces. On a serious note what sort of life is that you might as well not exist if by virtue of one being female you have no freedom to do anything like talking. Surely?
Are we really in 2024? An air of helplessness for the girls around the world, walking in fear , fear that another human being could hack you with a saw in the streets, case in point Ivy Wangechi a medical student. Fear that you will be abducted, raped, parts removed and then dumped in a bag or in a dumpsite, case in point more than 90 women reported. Too much fear to even trust your own partner in your own home where it is meant to be safe because he might set you on fire case in point Rebecca a great promising athlete.
I have no solution for this, it just seems it’s one of those things that will forever live to be, because humans with absurd mental issues, humans who cant control their anger, emotions, greed, and jealousy are still being born and raised. Maybe, what we do is to check ourselves, our kids, siblings raise them with some sense of humanity, ‘utu‘ ,teach them how to manage emotions early , how to live and coexist with people.
In the mean time, we can only take extra precautions, because you just never know. Only walk in faith that your partner is humane, only trust that your friends mean well, see red flags early and run off early, avoiding being out at night alone, moderate drinking, having the courage to leave everything behind when threatened, reporting abuse early, seeking haven early. I don’t know what to say, since we cannot control humans for real , even the people meant to protect us do not. The government continues to give a blind eye , I mean we do not even have an appointed cabinet secretary for gender yet. We are on our own!
